Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)

2026 Intake Status: Paused

Starting January 1, 2026, IRCC has paused the intake of new applications for the Parents and Grandparents Program until further notice.

This pause allows the department to focus on processing existing applications and reducing the backlog. No new "Interest to Sponsor" forms are being accepted at this time. Families are strongly encouraged to consider the Super Visa as a faster alternative.

Program Overview

The PGP allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents to come to Canada as permanent residents.

Eligibility Criteria

1. Income Requirements (MNI)

You must meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) for your family size. The income must be met for each of the 3 taxation years preceding the date of application.

2. Status

You must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered Indian under the Canadian Indian Act, and be at least 18 years old.

3. Undertaking

You must sign an undertaking to financially support your parents or grandparents for 20 years (10 years in Quebec).

Alternative: The Super Visa

If you are not selected for the PGP, you may be eligible for the Super Visa. This is a multi-entry visitor visa valid for up to 10 years, allowing stays of up to 5 years at a time.
